Sharing my personal journey with you all, as it's been quite a rollercoaster and I hope my story resonates with some of you. Couple years ago, I found myself facing a harsh reality – after years of playing rugby, I discovered I had multiple retina tears in both eyes. This came as a shock as I was preparing to have LASIK eye surgery to correct my vision where the doctor said the condition of my retina is not suitable for LASIK. The doctors explained that the intense physicality of rugby, combined with my eyes naturally being slightly oval shaped leading to thinner retina in certain areas lead to these retina tears. The treatment involved laser surgery to "pin my retina back in place" to prevent a retina detachment and a couple weeks of recovery, you can see photos of my eyes couple days after surgery in attached photos. Overall, I'm more gutted about needing to switch sports ad not being able to have LASIK to fix my vision than the "injury" itself as I didn't feel any pain or discomfort before finding out. Though I have lived with slight eye floaters for majority of my life so perhaps that is one warning sign for anyone out there. Ultimately, I consider myself very lucky to have found this out early and got the treatment for it cause this was leading to a potential retina detachment and that would have made this situation a lot more complicated!
